Cop Chasing Suspects Struck by Motorcycle in Brooklyn

A New York City police officer is in grave condition this morning after being hit by a motorcycle in Brooklyn while pursuing a group of car thieves.

Officer Carlos Olmedo, 31, was said to be investigating a stolen car in Bensonhurt when he spotted several suspects who ran off.  Olmedo chased the suspects near the intersection of 20th Avenue and 84th Street when he was hit by the motorcycle.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg  said today thatOlmedo was in "very grave condition'' on Sunday at Lutheran Medical Center in

Brooklyn and had undergone surgery to reduce pressure on his brain. "He's being treated by the best doctors that are here, and at this point I think it's in the hands of God,'' Bloomberg told reporters after meeting with Olmeda's family.

motorcycle operator fell during the collision and was also hospitalized and no charges are pending. Police said the three men Olmedo was chasing were taken into custody and were being questioned.

Olmedo has been with the department for more than three years.
