Coney Island Hosts 24th Sand Sculpting Contest

Scores of sand artists are competing in the 24th annual sand sculpting contest in Coney Island.

Organizers say more than 70 people are aiming to outdo each other on Saturday.

There's another best-of in this competition: Organizers say the sand on Brooklyn's waterfront is some of the finest in the country. They say it absorbs the ocean water so the sculpted creations hold up.

Competitors Saturday include professionals who have traveled the world building sand castles from Japan to Brazil and all over the United States.

Thousands of spectators stopped to admire the creations opposite Deno's Wonder Wheel.
