A Long Island teen who found an air gun on the ground as he walked to school was arrested after he brought it into the building, police said Monday.
A witness saw the 17-year-old boy put the gun in his backpack and notified Commack High School officials, Suffolk County police said.
The boy was searched and the gun was located.
The school said in a statement that the gun was found to be "inoperable."
"Commack High School was and remains secure, with our students and staff safe with minimal disruption to their school routines," the school said.
