An off-duty police officer was killed in a car crash involving a garbage truck on Long Island early Friday morning.

Police say 40-year-old Suffolk County Police Officer Patrick Curley was driving on Route 25, near Siracusa Boulevard in Comack, when his SUV collided with a garbage truck at around 3:30 a.m.

Curley, a 17-year veteran of the department, was pronounced dead at the scene, officials said.

The driver of the garbage truck, 59-year-old James Jarosch, was not not injured. Police issued summonses to Jarosch for unsafe backing and equipment violation.

Authorities say an investigation is ongoing.
