College Student, 17, Killed on Long Island Road After Checking Car Following Accident: Police

A 17-year-old Long Island college student was struck and killed by a car when he got out of his own vehicle to check it after a separate hit-and-run crash, authorities say.

Anil John, a former Islip high school basketball player, had pulled over on Crooked Hill Road near Suffolk County Community College after a fender-bender around 9:30 a.m. Tuesday. He got out of his 2011 Hyundai Sonata and was then hit by a 2009 Ford moving southbound on the road.

The driver of the Ford, 81-year-old Thomas Stapleton, of East Northport, remained at the scene. He was taken to a hospital for observation.

John was pronounced dead at the scene.

Both vehicles were impounded for safety checks.

According to Newsday, John was studying computer engineering and computer science at Suffolk County Community College.

He eventually wanted to start a business with his cousin and was remembered as a "very loving, family-oriented person" who always had a smile on his face, the paper reported.
