NYPD Asks for Public's Help Investigating 1993 Killing of Baby Found in Trash Bag

What to Know

  • Police have released a new sketch of a newborn girl found dead in a Brooklyn courtyard in November 1993
  • They're hoping to crack the cold case as the anniversary of the baby's death approaches
  • A similar effort helped the NYPD crack the cold case murder of Baby Hope

Police are asking for help investigating a nearly 23-year-old cold case murder of a newborn in Brooklyn.

The NYPD Tuesday released a sketch of newborn girl found dead inside a trash bag with a dish towel tied around her neck on Nov. 8, 1993.

The bag was found in the courtyard of 346 Montgomery St. in Crown Heights at about 8:30 a.m. that Monday morning, with her umbilical cord still attached.

Sources say the baby was born inside one of the building apartments and then thrown out a window into the courtyard.

The sketch of the baby is new. Police are hoping it will bring in tips as the 23rd anniversary of the baby's death approaches.

Investigators have had luck in cracking similar cases: in October 2013, police made an arrest in the murder of Baby Hope, a child dumped in a cooler in the woods in upper Manhattan in 1991. After police reopened the case more than 20 years later, a tipster helped lead detectives to a suspect.
