Coast Guard Rescues 2 Men From Shark-Infested Waters After Boat Sinks

Two men were rescued by the U.S. Coast Guard after their boat sank off New Jersey in waters teeming with sharks, officials say.

The men were about 40 miles south of Sandy Hook on Friday morning when their 35-foot boat began to sink, according to officials.

They sent out a distress call and boarded a life raft before their boat overturned and sank for reasons that are not yet known, officials said.

A Coast Guard crew from Air Station Atlantic City arrived at the sunken ship in a helicopter, but they were unable to deploy a rescue swimmer because the raft was surrounded by sharks, officials said.

A good Samaritan aboard a fishing vessel was able to rescue the two men from the life raft.

A crew from Coast Guard Station Sandy Hook eventually made it to the scene, where they loaded the two men onto their 47-foot lifeboat and brought them back to Sandy Hook, officials said.

No injuries were reported.
