More than a dozen additional subpoenas surrounding the George Washington Bridge scandal are expected to be issued by a New Jersey legislative committee.
The new round comes after 20 people and organizations close to Gov. Chris Christie were due to return subpoenaed documents about the plot to shut down lanes leading to the bridge last September.
All but a few in the first round of subpoenas have sought more time. Two key figures are fighting to have the subpoenas withdrawn.
The special legislative panel met Monday, and decided on the new subpoenas in a closed-door session, legislators said. They were set to go out Tuesday, all to individuals.
Christie himself has not been subpoenaed, but his office and campaign have been.
The panel is trying to figure out why Christie associates orchestrated the operation and how high up the chain of command the plan was discussed.
Legislators who have read the subpoenaed documents that have come in tell NBC 4 New York they have yet to see any "smoking guns."
The scandal has taken a toll on the governor and possible 2016 Republican presidential candidate. His job-approval rating has dropped in public opinion polls.
