Minivan Driver Runs Over 6-Year-Old Boy in Brooklyn Crosswalk, Leaves

What to Know

  • Surveillance video from a nearby electronics and cellphone store shows the minivan running a red light before hitting the child
  • The driver appears to get out and look at the vehicle -- and then gets back in and leaves the scene
  • It's not clear if the driver knew he had hit anyone because the father of the hit child had already picked him up and run for help

A 6-year-old boy was injured in a hit-and-run in Brooklyn Wednesday, police say, and surveillance video shows the minivan running entirely over the child before taking off.

The minivan struck the boy at the intersection of Fort Hamilton Parkway and 41st Street in Borough Park at about 4:30 p.m., according to police.

Surveillance video from a nearby electronics and cellphone store shows the minivan running a red light and mowing down the child in a crosswalk. A man with the boy immediately picks him up and runs off, looking for help.

The driver appears to get out and look at  the vehicle -- and then gets back in and leaves the scene. It's not clear if the driver was aware he'd hit anyone since the father had already fled with the boy by the time he got out.

But the owner of the business that captured the collision on video is convinced the driver had to know he hit someone.

"If you're from this area, there's no speed bumps here. You know that wasn't a speed bump. You know you hit something," said Britt Arguetta.

The child was taken to Maimonides Hospital, where he was listed in serious but stable condition.
