NYC Forms Task Force to Help Child Migrants

New York City has formed a task force in response to the growing number of Central American child migrants who've arrived in the city in recent months.

The city's commissioner for immigrant affairs told The New York Times her office was leading a newly formed interagency working group on how best to assist the young migrants.

The Times says federal officials have sent over 3,200 children to the city and other parts of the state to be reunited with relatives or to live with guardians. Citing immigrants' advocates, it says about 7,000 more are expected in coming months.

The New York Immigration Coalition said community-based immigrant advocacy groups met Thursday with city, state and federal officials to discuss how to create a coordinated strategy to meet the children's needs
