A 9-year-old boy was struck and killed by a local politician's campaign bus Tuesday.

A businessman running for a New York City Council seat has suspended all campaign activities after a 9-year-old boy was struck and killed by a bus being used to promote his candidacy.

Businessman Michael Ricatto said in a statement released on Tuesday shortly after the fatal collision that he was "deeply saddened" by the accident that killed the boy, Ibrihim Ahmed.

"I think this must have been the worst day of my life," an emotional Ricatto told the New York Post. "I have a boy his age. It's absolutely a tragedy."

Ahmed was struck by the bus in the intersection of Cross Bay Boulevard and Liberty Avenue in Queens about 3:40 p.m. Tuesday. He died at the scene. Police arrested the bus driver on a charge of driving with a suspended license.

Ricatto's campaign was using the bus to promote him as a candidate in a special election for a City Council seat being vacated by state Sen.-elect Joseph Addabbo Jr.
