Long Island Teen Arraigned in Beating of His Mother

The 18-year-old was arrested on an assault charge after the bloody scene was discovered Saturday in the family's Dix Hills home

Prosecutors say a Long Island teenager with a history of mental illness has been arraigned in the beating of his mother.

The Suffolk County district attorney's office said Friday an investigation is ongoing into the death of the 18-year-old's 15-year-old brother. A prosecutor said in court additional charges were possible.

Charles Okonkwo Jr. of Dix Hills pleaded not guilty to one count of assault. A judge ordered a psychiatric exam.

Authorities say he attacked his mother, Chinwe Okonkwo, in their home July 19. The woman remains in a coma at Stony Brook University Hospital with facial fractures.

Authorities also found his 15-year-old brother Bradley dead in the home. They're awaiting autopsy results.

The teen's attorney did not immediately return a call for comment. He previously called the case "complicated."
