Knife-Wielding Thieves Rob Central Park Boathouse, Steal Tip Jar

Staff at the Loeb Boathouse said the two men flashed knives and took a tip jar and cell phones

Police are searching for two men with knives who robbed the rental booth at the Central Park Boathouse Tuesday evening, stealing a tip jar and cell phones.

Staff at the Loeb Boathouse said the two men approached the booth at around 6:30 p.m., flashed knives and demanded cash as boaters and diners watched.

According to police, the two men made off with a tip jar filled with money and several cell phones.

Workers said they chased the two men as they ran off towards Fifth Avenue, but were unable to catch them.

Police helicopters were employed in the search, though no arrests have been made.

Park-goers Tuesday night said they were shocked to learn of the brazen robbery at the popular spot.

"You don't really hear about this," said Sean Tarzy, an Upper East Side resident. "During the day I feel it's the most beautiful place to walk by and the most peaceful. Seems weird and surprising."
