Police are looking for a man they say followed a 41-year-old woman into an apartment building in Harlem Tuesday and tried to rape her.

The man approached the woman while she was sitting on the building's front steps around 10 p.m. Tuesday, police say.

When the woman got up and went inside, the man followed and attacked. The woman was able to fight off the attacker, police say, and the man ran away.

Police released surveillance photos of the man (above) around the time of the attack.

In Central Harlem Friday night, several woman said they had heard about the attack and that it reminded them to stay aware of their surroundings.

"You become conscious of how much you have to be on guard for things like this on a regular basis, no matter where you are," said Daphne Cayetano.

Anyone with information about the suspect is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-577-TIPS.
