Recently Hired NJ Police Director Charged With Drunken Driving

The recently hired police director for a central New Jersey town has been suspended without pay after he was charged with drunken driving in a neighboring community.

Old Bridge police say 71-year-old Ronald Franz was arrested Tuesday night after his car ran off a roadway and struck a curb. He was off-duty at the time and driving his personal car.

Franz is a retired state police captain who was hired as Carteret's civilian police director on Feb. 1 at a salary of $70,000. He was not injured in the single-car crash.

It's not known if Franz has retained an attorney. A telephone number for him could not be located Wednesday.

The borough of Carteret says its attorney is investigating, and that "once the investigation has been completed, the borough will take any and all appropriate action."
