A Nassau County legislator has been arrested on assault and child endangerment charges after allegedly grabbing his girlfriend on the neck and pushing her against a wall as the woman's teenage daughter tried to intervene, authorities say.
Carrie Solages, a Democrat who represents the Valley Stream area, was taken into custody overnight following the fray.
The woman was treated at the scene. Her daughter was not hurt.
Solages pleaded not guilty to the charges in court, where prosecutors said there's an unreported history of the domestic violence in the home Solages shares with his girlfriend and three children, including the couple's son.
His attorney, Brian Griffin, told reporters, "He has given his service to the public. Now what he asks of the public is they give him his presumption of innocence, which everyone is entitled to."
Solages is a former prosecutor in the Bronx and a six-year Nassau legislator. Despite his record, lawmakers on both sides of the aisle are calling for his resignation.
"We cannot look the other way, and while this investigation continues, legislator Solages should do the right and honorable thing and step down immediately," said fellow Nassau County legislator Denise Ford.
Griffin said any call for Solages' resignation is premature. Solages was freed without bail, but the judge issued three orders of protection for his girlfriend and her two children.
