Victim in Cardiac Arrest Rescued from Burning Home

Firefighters rescued a Long Island man who was trapped in his burning house and suffering cardiac arrest, authorities said Sunday.

Dix Hill firefighters quickly located the man in the back bedroom of the one-story house after responding to the fire at 11:25 p.m. Saturday, fire officials said. They pulled him to safety through the front door and a rescue squad revived him and took him to Good Samaritan Hospital in West Islip.

Information about the condition of the man, whom authorities didn't identify, was unavailable.

About 70 firefighters had the blaze under control within 40 minutes, said Steve Silverman, spokesman for the Dix Hill Fire Department. A pet dog and cat died in the fire.

One firefighter sustained a cut to his hand and was taken to Huntington Hospital. Another firefighter was treated at the scene for smoke inhalation.

The Huntington Town Fire Marshal is investigating the cause of the fire.
