Five students walking to middle school Tuesday morning were seriously hurt when a car jumped the curb and hit them near an intersection in Queens, authorities said.
Emergency crews responded about 8 a.m. to the accident at Grand Avenue and 71st Street in Maspeth, which is near a school.
"They just came out of nowhere, like no one saw the car, it just came," said one child who saw the crash.
After the crash, witnesses said they helped lift the car off one student who was pinned beneath it.
"We were just all screaming, trying to lift the car, yeah, get them out of there," said one passerby.
They were all taken to the hospital in serious condition. Two were treated and released and three others were in stable condition by the afternoon.
