Captain America Statue Unveiled in Prospect Park

One of Brooklyn's most famous fictional heroes now has a very real statue in Prospect Park.

A 13-foot-tall bronze statue of Captain America was unveiled Wednesday afternoon in the park's carousel, near Flatbush and Ocean avenues. The giant statue, which bears the inscription "I'm just a kid from Brooklyn" was unveiled in honor of the comic's 75th Anniversary.

The 1-ton statue was initially unveiled at San Diego Comic Con and will stay in the park for two weeks. Then it'll move outside Barclays Center through September before making an appearance outside a Bed Bath & Beyond in Sunset Park.

The New York Post reports that tnot all Brooklynites are happy to see the star-spangled superhero's visage in the park. Park advocates said that the park has been designated "commercial-free" and the statue amounts to an ad for Marvel, which created Captain America.

In the Marvel comics, Captain America's alter ego, Steve Rogers, was born in Brooklyn and has lived in several neighborhoods throughout the borough throughout the comic's 75-year run.
