Canadian Police Department Threatens to Make Drunk Drivers Listen to Nickelback

One Canadian police department has a stern holiday warning for motorists: drink and drive, and you'll have to listen to Nickelback on your way to jail.

Police in Kensington, a small town on Prince Edward Island, said in a Facebook post on Saturday that drivers caught driving under the influence will not only face a year of driving suspension, fines and criminal charges -- they'll also have to listen to the Canadian rock band's 2001 album "Silver Side Up" after they're arrested.

"Lets not ruin a perfectly good unopened copy of Nickelback," the department said. "You don't drink and drive and we won't make you listen to it."

The post was first reported by the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation. Department spokesman Robb Hartlen told the news outlet that police were trying to "put a little humor into a very serious matter of drinking and driving."

He said the department picked Nickelback because its lead singer, Chad Kroeger, had been arrested for drinking and driving in Canada in 2006.

NBC 4 New York has reached out to the band's management company seeking comment.

It's not the only police department to threaten drivers with music this holiday season. The Wyoming, Minnesota, Police Department tweeted that drunk drivers would have to listen to One Direction cover bands after their arrests.
