Traveling This Holiday Weekend? Get a Head Start

Those who are traveling out of town this holiday weekend should give themselves some extra time.

This Memorial Day weekend could be one of the busiest rushes for travelers in over a decade, experts say, and added security in the wake of the deadly blast in Manchester could slow things down even more.

AAA predicts at least 40 million people are expected to travel 50 miles or more away from home this holiday weekend, which is the highest travel volume for the last weekend of May in 12 years.

“I’d get a head start,” Richard Monk, who is traveling to Boston, said. “Make plans ahead of time. Avoid the traffic.”

Port Authority is making some warnings about security. It will be stepping up its security efforts, which comes on the heels of the deadly blast outside an Ariana Grande concert in Manchester.

Random bag and vehicle checks are among the added security efforts, as well as extra personnel at the agency's bridges, tunnels and airports.
