Burned Babylon School to Be Rebuilt

A Long Island school board has voted to rebuild an elementary school that was devastated by a fire last month.

The West Babylon Board of Education made the unanimous vote at a special meeting Tuesday night.

Superintendent Anthony Cacciola said it's not clear yet whether South Bay Elementary will be rebuilt from the ground up. Part of the structure still remains. An architectural firm is being hired.

More than 300 students have been moved to a nearby Catholic school that had been built but never opened. It's not known whether the new school will be ready by fall.

Authorities said the Feb. 18 fire started accidentally in plastic bags stuffed with painting materials. The school was closed for winter break when it happened.
