Burglar Pretends to Be Neighbor to Scam Elderly: NYPD

Police say a man has been posing as a neighbor to get into elderly people's apartments in Brooklyn and steal from them.

The man is wanted in two burglaries in Brighton Beach buildings, in the area of Beach 7th Street, according to police.

In each incident, he followed the elderly residents to their buildings and told them he was their upstairs neighbor and that water was leaking from his unit into their apartment.

He said he wanted to inspect the damage so he could pay for them, police said. He then asked the victims for change for a $100 bill so he could leave $50. While in the apartment, he took jewelry and money.

None of the victims was hurt.

An 89-year-old victim was targeted on Dec. 24, and an 88-year-old victim was targeted on Jan. 19.
