Brooklyn's Exotic Cheese Tests Positive for Listeria in R.I.

Rhode Island heath officials are warning people not to eat an exotic cheese from a Brooklyn-based firm after routine tests came back positive for the bacteria that causes listeria.

Department of Health spokeswoman Annemarie Beardsworth says the advisory covers queso fresco manufactured by Azteca Linda Corp. that has an expiration date of Sep. 11.

Beardsworth says there are no confirmed reports of anyone getting sick from the cheese. She says the health department doens't know exactly where it was distributed, but knows the cheese was sold in Rhode Island.

Health officials expect the manufacturer to recall the product.

Listeria can cause serious infections in young children, the elderly and those with weakened immune systems.
