Di Fara Pizza, which has been treating taste buds to its storied NYC slices for over 50 years, was shut down Tuesday after owing more than $150,000 in unpaid taxes to the state of New York.
The New York State Department of Taxation and Finance confirmed that the Midwood pizzeria is now closed citing that it owes $167,506.75 in taxes. The department also placed a sign on Di Fara’s Avenue J storefront stating that the property “has been seized for nonpayment of taxes,” and anyone who attempts to tamper with the property will be “prosecuted to the full extent of the law.”
One Twitter user traveled over an hour to find out that the famed pies were not for sale on Tuesday, and anyone else who attempted to visit was met with that orange sign on the store’s front door.
This is not the first time Di Fara has been closed this year, as the pizzeria was temporarily closed in May following a failed health inspection. Currently, there is no telling on when, or if, the Midwood location will re-open.
Di Fara, an iconic family-owned and operated staple in Brooklyn, opened in Midwood in 1965. A second location opened shop in Williamsburg in 2017. That location is still open.
