Brooklyn Principal in 2012 “God Bless the USA” Controversy Reassigned Amid Misconduct Probe: Officials

A Brooklyn elementary school principal and assistant principal have been reassigned pending a misconduct investigation by the Department of Investigation, education officials said.

The nature of the misconduct allegations involving Greta Hawkins, principal at P.S. 90, and Gayle Gordon, assistant principal there, weren't immediately clear. Another assistant principal is in place at the school, and school officials are in the process of naming an acting principal, according to News 12.

Hawkins made national headlines in 2012 over her decision to pull the song "God Bless the USA" at a kindergarten graduation. At the time, she said the move was intended to avoid potentially offending other cultures.

Hawkins used Justin Bieber's hit song "Baby" instead.

"The superintendent and DOE are working closely with Assistant Principal Losardo and school staff to ensure that there is no disruption to student instruction," the Department of Education said in a statement on the principals' reassignment this week.

The teachers' union declined to comment on the probe.

Several parents advocated their support for Hawkins and said they were angry they hadn't specifically been told why she was reassigned.
