Fireballs, Sounds Possible in Stunt Filming; NYers Shouldn't Be Alarmed: NYC

Tucked away behind the walls of the Brooklyn Navy Yard, crews are working to make a fiery scene for the small screen, and residents should not be alarmed if they hear the simulated explosions Tuesday night.

A tweet from Notify NYC alerted residents about the two simulated stunts scheduled between 5:30 and 8:30 p.m., and said FDNY and NYPD will be standing by.

It's possible two fireballs may be seen on the Manhattan side, as they could go as high as 20 feet, but won't be visible on the Brooklyn side, according to the Mayor's Office of Media and Entertainment. The sound will be "somewhat minimal," comprising three bangs within seconds, similar to a firework.

There will be no heavy explosion sound, and the simulation will be on the Navy Yard side of Flushing Avenue, completely contained and on private property.

Still, neighbors wondered if the stunt would alarm some in such a sensitive environment after the Paris terror attacks. Doug Manning said New Yorkers are on edge.

"It makes me wonder how they're reaching people," he said. "Especially if they're large, I think will scare the hell out of people."

The activity was approved last week by the city before the Paris attacks, according to the Mayor's Office of Media and Entertainment, adding that it worked with community leaders to spread the word.

The city has especially become a hotspot for filming since a tax incentive program launched in 2005, and the industry continues to grow, according to the Mayor's Office of Media and Entertainment: There are currently 46 episodic TV shows filming this season, up from 29 last season, and the city's on track to see 250 films in 2015, up from 242 in 2014.

Marcos Rodriguez runs a sandwich shop near the Navy Yard and said the film industry has only helped that section of Brooklyn. He appreciates the city alerting residents when loud, jarring stunts are scheduled to take place.

"Nothing to worry about, everything is peace," he said. "That's what they do."
