Suspect in Brooklyn Cabbie Killing Arrested in North Carolina

A suspect in the killing of a cab driver in Brooklyn earlier this year has been arrested in North Carolina.

Greenville police say 23-year-old Unique Everlast Gray has been arrested and is awaiting extradition to New York City to face charges in the killing of 35-year-old cab driver Naji Fawaz on June 29.

Police told local media outlets that Gray had run from a traffic stop Aug. 25 but was spotted by an officer again Sunday morning and taken into custody.

Police was a passenger in the traffic stop earlier and had given them a false name. Investigators learned his real name and that he was wanted in New York.

Fawaz was found shot in the front driver’s seat just after 12:21 a.m. at Decatur Street and Malcolm X Boulevard in Bedford-Stuyvesant, police and fire officials said.

Fawaz, who was shot in the neck and torso, was taken to Kings County Hospital, where he died.

A dispatcher for the company Fawaz worked for said that the 35-year-old was in the process of looking for a new apartment because the area he had lived in was dangerous.

Fawaz has been licensed to drive livery cars since 2013, and was driving a vehicle owned by a car service on Fourth Avenue in Brooklyn.

It was not clear if he has an attorney for an extradition hearing.
