Man, 69, Shot Dead in Home Invasion in Brooklyn: NYPD

A 69-year-old man was shot dead during a home invasion in Brooklyn Wednesday morning, police said.

A 71-year-old woman answered the door at her home on Rugby Road in Ditmas Park shortly before 11 a.m.; three men forced their way inside, tied her up with plastic zip ties and stuffed a handkerchief in her mouth, police sources said.

The men then demanded money and began to search her home. Upstairs, the men encountered the woman's brother and shot him in the head, police sources said.

The suspects then fled the home, leaving the woman uninjured. It's not clear if they got away with anything.

Police say the woman didn't know the intruders.

The woman's brother, identified as 69-year-old Leonard Phillips, was pronounced dead at Kings County Hospital, police said.

Neighbor Fatima Kahn said a friend who knew the family called them "hard-working people."

"It's shocking that this would happen here," she said;.
