Brooklyn Day Care Shut Down as City Investigates Video of Alleged Abuse

A child care center in Brooklyn has been shut down while city officials investigate a video that shows a worker grabbing and pulling a student either by the hair or ear, authorities say.

Avalon Childcare on Fifth Avenue in Park Slope was closed Thursday after the Department of Health and Hygiene said it was looking into the video. Another video shows a teacher allegedly pushing a student to the ground, a department spokesman said.

The owner of the day care emphasized that its license was suspended, not revoked, pending the investigation. He said he would be going to the health department to "show what happened," but didn't elaborate.

The Health Department said in a statement ensuring the safety of every child in the city's day care system is a top priority.

"This center's permit was suspended immediately after a Health Department investigation, and we are currently working to help families find alternative, high-quality daycare options for their children," the statement said.
