Brooklyn Brownstone Fire Kills 1: NYPD

A fire at an apartment in Brooklyn on Saturday killed a 79-year-old woman, police said.

Elizabeth Mahone lived in the basement of the three-story brownstone on Quincy Street near Throop Avenue in Bed-Stuy. She was unconscious when she was pulled out of the building and pronounced dead at the scene, the NYPD said.

The cause of the fire, which broke out shortly before 7 p.m., remains under investigation.

Neighbors said Mahone had a home attendant who left shortly before the fire started.
