Man Mistook Woman for Rival Gang Member in Fatal Bronx Shooting: NYPD

Police are looking for the man they say shot and killed a 31-year-old woman walking home from work in the Bronx earlier this month because he mistakenly thought she was a member of a rival street gang.

Dune Janelle Jacobs died after being shot in the head at East 213th Street and Holland Avenue in Williamsbridge early on Dec. 2, according to the NYPD. Her family said that she was walking home from her job as a cook at a Buffalo Wild Wings in Brooklyn, where she had recently been promoted, when she was gunned down.

Police have identified 23-year-old Brendrick "Diddy" Brown as the man who shot Jacobs.

They say that Brown is a member of the "Young Guns" street crew and allegedly shot at the woman, who was wearing a heavy coat with a hood, because he mistook her for a member of the rival "Brothers for Another" gang.

Jacobs' family has said that she was looking to move before she died because of gang activity in the neighborhood.

Police say after the shooting, they spotted down a Nissan Altima that was seen near the block where Jcobs was killed. Officers followed the vehicle, which accelerated through a series of stop signs.

About two blocks from the scene, officers saw someone throw what appeared to be a handgun out of the car. Police lost the car after the short chase but were able to recover a gun, which was matched to shell casings at the shooting scene.

The car was later found, abandoned but still running, at Brown's last known New York City address.

Investigators say that they later arrested 23-year-old Devon Jenkins and 22-year-old Fabian Coke in connection to Jacobs' death. Police say that Jenkins was driving the Altima and that Coke was sitting in the front seat at the time of the shooting. Both men face murder, manslaughter and weapons crime charges.

Police also charged 26-year-old Omar Hidalgo with criminal possession of a forged instrument after the shooting. Hidalgo is accused of renting the Altima from a Hertz Rent-A-Car in Tampa, Florida, never returning it and then charging people who lived in a Bronx housing project to use the vehicle.

Police say that Brown is on probation for committing grand larceny in South Carolina in 2012, and was last seen at a family member's house in the Palmetto State three days after the shooting.

Anyone with information about Brown's whereabouts is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 800-577-TIPS.
