Police are looking for the suspect who stole a Jeep in the Bronx with a baby in the backseat.

Police are looking for the thief who stole an SUV with a 7-month-old baby in the back in the Bronx Tuesday night. The baby and car were found safe nearby about an hour later.

The 7-month-old baby was in the backseat of a 2005 silver Jeep Cherokee with her parents when they stopped at a cell phone business near Morris Avenue and East Kingsbridge Road in Kingsbridge at about 6:30 p.m., police said.

The father went inside the store to pay a bill, and the mother followed him briefly, police said. That's when someone jumped into the vehicle and took off, police said.

The Jeep was located nearly a mile away from where it was stolen at Jerome and Inwood avenues, with the baby inside. Checkey Beckford reports.

"When he took off, the baby was asleep," said  family friend Sonia Rodriguez. "I guess the baby got up and when the baby cried, he must have looked back and realized there's a baby in here."

The Jeep was located about an hour later nearly a mile away at Jerome and Inwood avenues, with the baby inside.

Police are still searching for the thief.

There were surveillance cameras near where the car was recovered, and video was released Wednesday of the thief.

"I thought we would never see her again. Hopefully this guy will be caught," said Rodriguez.

The baby is doing fine after the ordeal.

"She's wonderful," said Rodriguez. "She's laughing, she's biting on her toes."
