Bronx Man Gets Prison for Beating Puppy to Brink of Death

Prosecutors say a New York City man will serve a year behind bars for beating beating his 4-month-old puppy so badly that she couldn't eat or walk.

Dwayne Gentles will serve the maximum sentence allowable for the conviction of injuring an animal after his badly-beaten young pit bull Brandy had to be euthanized four days before Christmas in 2012, according to the Bronx District Attorney's Office.

Johnson's office says the pit bull suffered 13 broken ribs, a jaw fracture that prevented her from eating, and two broken legs during her short life. She appeared to be the victim of blunt-force trauma, and veterinarians said she may have also suffered neurological damage.

During the trial, neighbors testified they could hear the ailing dog's endless whimpers from Gentle's apartment.

Prosecutors say the emaciated, flea-ridden dog was barely conscious when Gentles brought her to a veterinarian. Once there, the dog -- which had injuries ranging from days to months old -- was euthanized.

Once he is released from prison, Gentles will be barred from owning a dog for one year.
