Man Gets 18 Years to Life for Mutilating, Dumping Woman's Body

A Bronx man was sentenced Wednesday to 18 years to life in prison for fatally choking a 32-year-old woman and slicing off her fingertips before dumping the body off a Brooklyn pier.

Charles Wright, 35, had pleaded guilty last month to second-degree murder and two counts of fourth-degree grand larceny prosecutor in the case, prosecutors said.

“This horrific murder was made even worse by this defendant’s barbaric mutilation and subsequent dumping of the victim's body into Jamaica Bay," said Brooklyn District Attorney Ken Thompson. "Such sadistic acts show that the defendant is simply unfit to remain in society and deserves every day of the 18-year prison sentence that he will now serve.”

Wright argued with the victim, Shaniqua Davis, inside a Brooklyn apartment on July 25, 2014, according to investigators. He strangled Davis, cut off her fingertips, tied her hands and feet and stuffed her body into a laundry bag, they said.

Wright drove the body to Canarsie Pier and tossed it into the water. The body was found about ten days later on a tidal island in Jamaica Bay.

Wright used the victim's ATM card to withdraw $141 at a grocery store and used her credit card for meals at fast food restaurants, police said.

Wright's girlfriend Tamanika Evans, 39, has pleaded guilty to first-degree hindering prosecution and fourth-degree larceny and is expected to be sentenced to a maximum of six years in prison, Thompson said.
