Driver Arrested in Deadly Long Island Hit-Run: Police

A Long Island man has been arrested in a deadly hit-and-run, police say.

The victim, 41-year-old Jose Salinas, was walking in the middle of the road on Washington Avenue in Brentwood Friday night when an SUV hit him and fled, police say.

Salinas was left lying on the road when a pickup truck hit him, according to police. The driver of that pickup stayed on the scene and called police.

Salinas was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the SUV that first hit Salinas, 54-year-old Cesar Velasquez, was arrested Saturday on a charge of leaving the scene of an accident resulting in death.

He was scheduled to be arraigned at First District Court in Central Islip Sunday.

The pickup truck driver has not been charged.
