Brazen Jewel Heist on LI's Miracle Mile

Four men have been arrested and up to two others are still being sought after a midday armed robbery in a Long Island jewelry store.

Bystanders could see smashed display cases inside London Jewelers in Manhasset, one of the many posh, high-end retail stores along the famed "Miracle Mile."

Armed gunmen wielding hammers destroyed the glass cases to steal a supply of Rolex watches from the store.

"This was a brazen robbery, in mid-day here," said Detective Lt. Kevin Smith, a Nassau police spokesman.

Four men dressed in blue jumpsuits with black bandannas covering their faces entered the store around 2 p.m., according to police.  At least two displayed handguns.

There were 13 employees and one customer inside at the time.

"They ordered everyone down, told them to be quiet and then smashed the countertops and retrieved property," said Smith.

No one was hurt, as the men then fled the store and jumped into a black Cadillac Escalade, with no license plates, said police.

The suspects' car headed to the Long Island Expressway, with police in pursuit.  Near the Nassau/Queens border, the Escalade lost control and hit the highway barrier.

At least five men ran from the car into the surrounding neighborhoods.

The NYPD and Lake Success police joined the hunt for the men. Mounted units and police helicopters searched the area.

Police identified the subjects as Leroy Nelson, 27; Javon Gamble, 31; and Reggie Fowler, 23, all of Brooklyn. Police say one suspect is still unidentified.

Two suspects were captured on the golf course of the Lake Success country club.  The NYPD nabbed two others in Little Neck.  One or possibly two more suspects are still being sought.

"We have recovered one handgun and some of the robbery proceeds," explained Smith.
