Man Stole Long Island Girlfriend's Cash, Jewelry: Police

Police arrested a Manhattan man who they say stole more than $20,000 in jewelry and $15,000 cash from his girlfriend's safe while she was away from her Long Island home.

Jason Batista, 27, is charged with second-degree burglary after the money and jewelry were taken from a safe in his 30-year-old girlfriend’s home in Oceanside on Monday, according to Nassau County police.

The safe was broken into after Batista returned the girlfriend’s car to the home, police say. The culprit likely got into the house using a duplicate key.

Batista will be arraigned Wednesday in Hempstead, police say. It is not clear if he has an attorney.
