3-Year-Old Boy Trapped in Burning New York Home Dies

A 3-year-old boy trapped in a burning home in upstate New York was found dead in a bedroom when firefighters doused the blaze, authorities said.

State police responding to a report of a fire at a bungalow colony -- a cluster of small rental summer homes -- in Sullivan County's Liberty shortly after 10 p.m. Sunday were told the boy was trapped in one of the buildings and tried to reach him but were forced back by smoke and flames, authorities said.

Fire departments from Liberty and four nearby towns responded and put out the fire. The boy's body was found in a back bedroom shortly thereafter.

A 5-year-old child was treated for burns to his leg, and a state police trooper and sergeant were treated for smoke inhalation at a hospital.

No other injuries were reported.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
