A 5-year-old Long Island boy has died of injuries he sustained in a crash Saturday involving a driver who was driving while under the influence of drugs, police said.
Steven Kinalis, 30, of Ronkonkoma was driving a 2007 Toyota Scion eastbound on Sunrise Highway Saturday morning when his vehicle rear-ended a 2004 Dodge pickup truck in Shirley, just east of William Floyd Parkway, according to police.
The pickup, being driven by Kevin Gaffney, 36, of West Islip, was pushed off the road and into a tree, police said, critically injuring Gaffney's 5-year-old son.
The boy was airlifted to Stony Brook Medical Center for treatment. He died Sunday, according to police.
Gaffney, his wife, 7-year-old daughter and 2-year-old son were also treated at Stony Brook, for non-life threatening injuries.
The driver was scheduled to be arraigned on a charge of driving while ability impaired by drugs at First District Court in Central Islip Sunday. Attorney information was not immediately available.
