Authorities are trying to determine whether a bone found on the Jersey City waterfront is human.
City police spokesman Lt. Edgar Martinez tells The Jersey Journal that a passer-by found the 2.5-inch bone around 10 a.m. Wednesday at the foot of Washington Street. It was taken to the state Regional Medical Examiner's Office in Newark to be tested, but it's not clear when the results will be available.
Further details on the discovery were not immediately disclosed.
In a related matter, Martinez said a team from the police department's Bureau of Criminal Investigation that was responding to the bone discovery call was involved in a two-car crash.
A police officer and a woman who was driving the other vehicle were both treated at a hospital for undisclosed injuries.
