Body Found Slumped Over Log in Long Island Park Probed as Homicide

The medical examiner will conduct an autopsy to determine how the man died

Police are investigating a body found slumped over a log in a Long Island park over the weekend as a homicide, authorities said.

Officials say the man was found in Mill Pond Park Preserve in Wantagh shortly after 4 p.m. Sunday.

Homicide and crime scene investigators, some with dogs, were scouring the area for clues Monday.

"It was apparent it was a homicide," said Nassau County Police Inspector Kenneth Lack, though he declined to go into further detail.

The park is not known for crime.

Neighbor Ellen Lockwood, who was walking her dog through the park Monday, said the discovery made her nervous.

"I've lived here 50 years in the community, and I've never heard anything like it," she said.

The medical examiner was conducting an autopsy to determine how the victim died.

Police are asking anyone with information about the death to contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-244-TIPS.
