Bobcat Sightings Reported Just Outside NYC

Several bobcat sightings have recently been reported just outside New York City.

The sightings occurred this month in Ardsley, a small village in Westchester County about 10 miles from the Bronx.

According to Ardsley Village Manager George Calvi, a homeowner photographed a bobcat in her backyard on Winding Farms Road. A patrolman also photographed a bobcat in Pascone Park and a public works employee saw a bobcat eating what may have been a woodchuck.

Bobcats are about twice the size of house cats and can weigh up to 30 pounds, according to the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation. They are generally found in the Adirondack, Catskill and Taconic regions and are rare in this area.

Calvi recommends that although the animals normally pose no threat to humans or large pets, close contact should be avoided.
