Boston Red Sox manager Bobby Valentine laughs as he talks to reporters at Major League Baseball's winter meetings in Dallas, Wednesday, Dec. 7.
New Boston Red Sox manager Bobby Valentine appears eager to stoke the flames of his team's legendary rivalry with the New York Yankees in his first days on the job.
"I hate the Yankees," he declared to the media while at the Baseball Winter Meetings in Dallas.
Chuckling, he repeated, "I hate the Yankees. I don't want to waste this valuable time talking about the Yankees. This is too valuable."
ESPN posted video on its website Wednesday of Valentine making the grand statement.
"I told Joe Girardi I used to love 'em," he continued, smiling. "But now I hate 'em."
Yankees manager Joe Girardi wasn't quite so passionate when speaking about Valentine at the Winter Meetings Tuesday: "Bobby adds some spunk to his clubs," he said, according to ESPN. "No doubt about it. I didn't get to witness him first-hand a lot. But Bobby's been successful wherever he has went. It should be exciting."
The Red Sox and the Yankees first meet in the regular season on April 20 at Fenway Park.
