Powell, a Republican, endorsed Obama last year in the presidential race. He has now thrown his support behind Mayor Bloomberg's re-election bid.

Former Secretary of State Colin Powell has endorsed Mayor Michael Bloomberg's re-election bid.

Powell offered the endorsement on Tuesday during a taping of Larry King Live.

The Republican who served during President George W. Bush’s first term, called Bloomberg a great candidate and an “independent guy who is always trying to solve problems.”

Powell, who is also a supporter of President Obama, was raised in the Bronx.

Bloomberg, a billionaire Republican-turned-independent running for a third term, has said Powell's nonpartisan leadership is something that he's always worked hard to emulate.

Earlier this month, civil rights activist Rev. Al Sharpton endorsed Bloomberg's leading opponent, Democrat William Thompson Jr.
