Bloody Scene as Woman Is Stabbed to Death in Middle of NYC Street

A 44-year-old woman was stabbed to death in the middle of a Bronx street early Monday, and the suspect, allegedly her ex-husband, fled the bloody scene in a dark sedan, according to law enforcement sources familiar with the investigation.

Law enforcement sources say the woman was stabbed multiple times at Holmes Street and Jackson Avenue around 8 a.m. Pools of blood turned the pavement red in the area, which authorities had completely cordoned off through the morning.

The victim was later identified as 44-year-old Adalgisa Degaro of the Bronx.

Neighbor Carmen Dixon said it happened right outside her front door.

"I heard a lady screaming, saying, 'Help me, help me, help me,'" she said. "When I came out, there was this man over her body, stabbing her, stabbing her, stabbing her."

"I did see the guy had a knife in his hand, and he plunging into her and plunging into her body,'" she said.

When Dixon screamed, the killer ran. A sanitation worker tried to stop the man, but he drove away in a black Toyota Camry.

Another woman, 44-year-old Dollys Sanchez, was driving to work when she turned the corner to see the victim struggling in the middle of the road.

"She was laying on the floor, full of blood and injured," said Sanchez. "You see like the wounds on her arms and her abdomen. It was horrible."

Degaro was pronounced dead at a hospital. A woman named Lidia de la Cruz says Degaro is a mother of two.

Degaro's ex-husband, 50-year-old Victor Garo of the Bronx, was arrested late Monday in connection with her slaying, police said. He is charged with murder, manslaughter and criminal possession of a weapon, according to police.
