Coldest Temperatures in Months Blast Tri-State

Tri-state residents who thought Monday's sub-freezing conditions were unbearable were in for a nasty surprise Tuesday as temperatures fell to their lowest point in more than nine months.

Lows Tuesday fell to the the low teens in New York City and in the single digits outside the city amid wind chills that made it feel like it was below zero in some places. The arctic conditions mark the coldest it's been in Central Park since March 6, when lows hit the 12-degree mark.

By mid-afternoon, the mercury had only climbed to 27 degrees in the city, though the wind chills made it feel like the teens.

The bitter cold comes amid an arctic snap that saw the first sustained temperatures below freezing for the first time this winter.

But relief isn't far away, as temperatures climb back into the 40s on Wednesday. By Friday, highs will be back in the upper 40s, followed by a mild weekend with a few showers, according to Storm Team 4.

The year 2015 also ended up being the seventh warmest on record, despite February also being one of the coldest months ever recorded.
