Police-Involved Shooting Shuts Down Part of I-84

A police-involved shooting shut down a portion of I-84 in Beacon for hours during the evening rush Thursday.

Officials say a Beacon police officer shot and killed a suspect who had just carjacked a vehicle at knifepoint in Memorial Park.

The suspect stole the at about 3:30 p.m. and officers responded to the scene, according to police. The suspect abandoned the car on North Elm Street and police followed him on foot through a wooded area near I-84.

Police say the suspect ran north across the eastbound and westbound lanes of the highway near Exit 11. When he got to the westbound shoulder, police say he threatened pursuing officers with a large knife, and he was shot and killed by police.

The suspect was not immediately identified.

The Newburgh-Beacon Bridge was shut down on both sides of the I-84 in Fishkill following the shooting, causing miles-long backups at one point.

One lane has since reopened in each direction, but there are still residual delays in both directions.
