Nuts! Historic Peanut Plant to Leave NYC

The factory was a New York staple for 125 years.

A longtime New York City nut factory is closing up and moving to Pennsylvania after 125 years.

The A.L. Bazzini Co. peanut plant, a long-time New York staple, is closing its Hunts Point plant and moving to Allentown, Pa. in July.

The plant's closing will mean the loss of up to 57 jobs in the Bronx, the Daily News reported.

"Bazzini is a New York brand," Rocco Damato, A.L. Bazzini CEO, told the paper. "This is not what we wanted to do. We had no choice."

About 30 employees are expected to join the new facility with the same salary and benefits. Approximately 50 employees in the company's distribution, accounting and customer service departments will remain in Hunts Point.

Daniel Laboy, the vice president of the union that represents the Bronx plant workers, told the News, "it's a loss of jobs for a lot of people."

"Everybody is moving out of New York. What can you do? It's always a hardship to lose people. It's not easy."

Before moving to Hunts Point in 1997, the factory was located in Tribeca.

The 125-year old business has been long been a supplier of nuts for Yankee stadium -- and that isn't expected to change.

"I won't pull all of Bazzini out of New York - not now, not ever," Damato said.
