Bayport Mother Charged With DWI in Telephone Pole Crash

Her 5-year-old child was in the car at the time of the crash, police said.

A mother of a young child was arrested on Long Island Thursday after she crashed into a telephone pole, a result of her being intoxicated, police said.

Officers responded to the crash in Bayport just before 1 p.m., when a Honda Accord crashed into a telephone pole on Oakwood Avenue near Homestead Road, Suffolk County police said.

The officers determined the driver, 40-year-old Cathleen Deutscher, was intoxicated. Her 5-year-old child was in the car when the crash occurred, police said.

The child suffered minor injuries and was treated at Brookhaven Memorial Hospital in East Patchogue, then released to the custody of family members.

Deutscher was charged with endangering the welfare of a child and aggravated driving while intoxicated with a child under 15 years old, a felony under Leandra'a Law.

She is scheduled to be arraigned in First District Central Court in Central Islip Friday. It wasn't immediately clear if Deutscher had an attorney.
